Berberine

Plant alkaloid for glycemic and metabolic balance.

Berberine
Introduction

The activator of AMPK

Berberine is an alkaloid of plant origin, traditionally used and today widely studied for its contribution to glycemic and metabolic balance. It acts by activating an important energy sensor of our cells, with a role in supporting insulin sensitivity.

Since glycemic balance is increasingly connected by research to the pace of cellular aging, berberine is considered an ingredient of growing interest in the longevity field.

What is Berberine

Berberine is extracted from the root of Berberis aristata and Berberis vulgaris and from Coptis chinensis, plants traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine.

It is the compound responsible for the characteristic yellow colour of these roots, and it is one of the few plant alkaloids to have been studied so extensively in the metabolic field.

Role in Longevity and Healthy Aging

Berberine activates AMPK, the main cellular energy sensor, with effects on the insulin resistance / FOXO axis linked to aging.

AMPK is activated when the cell perceives a reduction in available energy, triggering a metabolic response that partly overlaps with that of caloric restriction. This is the point of contact between metabolic balance and longevity research.

Nutraceutical Applications

Berberine is formulated in gastro-resistant capsules or tablets to improve gastrointestinal tolerability, and is generally divided into several daily administrations.

It is synergistic with Glucomyral and chromium picolinate on the axis of glycemic balance and insulin sensitivity. Because it can interact with certain medications, its use should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
