What is Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid whose primary source is the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is also present in wild salmon, krill and crustaceans, which owe their characteristic colour to it.
Unlike many other antioxidants, its molecular structure allows it to position itself across the cell membrane, protecting both its inner and outer surface.
Role in Longevity and Healthy Aging
Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble antioxidant that crosses the double cell membrane, countering mitochondrial oxidative stress.
Since mitochondria are both the main producers of cellular energy and one of the primary sites where free radicals are generated, an antioxidant able to act at this level is of particular interest in strategies dedicated to healthy aging.
Nutraceutical Applications
Given its lipophilic nature, astaxanthin is formulated in oil-based softgels. It is used in supplements for skin, eyes and physical performance.
It is commonly combined with Vitamin E and Omega-3 for the protection of lipid membranes, and with Lutein and Zeaxanthin in formulations dedicated to eye health.
